A moped driver was killed on Highway 52 in an accident this morning in Berkeley County. At roughly 6:15 am, the man was driving his moped northbound on Hwy. 52 through the Santee Circle community when he was hit from behind by another vehicle. The Berkeley County coroner's office reports that the moped driver was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
As of 8:00 am this morning, the victim's name is being withheld from the media as the man's family had yet to be informed of the accident. The moped driver had taken protective and preventative measures, found wearing a helmet and a reflective vest at the time of the crash. Unfortunately, these measures were unable to circumvent the accident or his death. Some of the worst moped and motorcycle accident injuries can often be prevented by the driver wearing a helmet. It is regrettable the driver's efforts in this case were in vain. The man's name will be released as soon as notification of his family members is confirmed.
The Berkeley County Coroner's office has begun an investigation in conjunction with the South Carolina Highway Patrol into the cause of the accident. Though it's too early to tell for sure given the released information, this accident appears to have been a hit-and-run. Many hit-and-run victims and their families are unaware that they may be able to collect money through their own insurance company to cover medical expenses as investigation of the accident proceeds.
